Significance of Tilgud for Makarsankranti

Significance of Tilgud for Makarsankranti

Today is a Festival of Makarsankranti/ Lohari and people are busy in buying kites, making Tilgud. This festival also brings health benefits. It signifies Uttarayana. i.e. The Sun travels to the northern hemisphere.which brings more light and energy to our part and also points to coming springs. But winter chills can still be felt. Environment is less humid which makes air dry. Even our body has to suffer from this dryness.
Hence to combat with effects of dryness we make Tilgud for this festival. Tilgud is prepared with basic ingredients like Til (sesame), Gud (Jaggery), Ground nuts and Dried Coconut. All these ingredients have various Ayurvedic health benefits.

Til(Sesame - Sesamum indicum) - sesame seeds are sweet to taste and bitter after digestion. These pacify Kapha-Vaat and mild aggravate Pitta. Create heat , Agnijanana (improves digestion), medhajanan (improves memory) , twachya (skin tonic), improve vigour and act as a hair tonic.

Gud (Jaggery) - it is Sweet to taste ( madhur rasa-vipaka) and pacifies Vaat-Pitta dosha. Jaggery prepared from Sugarcane molasses and free from any chemical actions (Organic) is alkaline in nature, creates mild heat, snigdha, clarifies urine and blood, generates fat (Medakar) , improves vigour and acts as an aphrodisiac.

Groundnuts - pacify Vaat but aggravate Pitta strongly hence to be consumed in moderate amount and to be avoided by Pitta prakriti ( people having pitta dominant Constitution of body)

Dried Coconut - it is Sweet to taste ( Madhur rasa-vipaki) , generates cooling effect (sheeta), pacifies n, Body Tonic ,Hair tonic and also acts as an aphrodisiac.
So it is easily understood that combination of these ingredients balances composition of Tridoshas in the body and gives strength. Hence we consume Tilgud during this season. we can also incorporate these ingredients in our daily diet in various other forms as well.
So "Tilgud kha aani god-god bola."
